WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Softball team swept the Loggers of Puget Sound Sunday afternoon at Palmer Field moving their winning streak to three games.
The Purple & Gold continue to swing the bats as they came away with 7-0 and 8-6 victories against UPS improving to 5-4-1, 1-1 SCIAC.
Game 1 (W, 7-0)
The Poets posted their first shutout on the season in game one holding the Loggers to just four hits, despite committing three errors for the game. Alexis Vargas (Pomona, Calif.) threw 4.0 innings strong giving up just two hits, while Sam Casanas (La Habra, Calif.) came in relief collecting the save going the final 3.0 innings.
Whittier got after UPS starter Erica Gott putting up two runs in the bottom half of the first, capitalizing on an error and a passed ball.
In the 3rd, they added another two this time off the bat of Brittany Attaway (Claremont, Calif.) who doubled to right center bringing across Kacey Whitney (Cypress, Calif.) and Danica Cooley (Paia, HI). Then to close out the game, WC put up a three-spot in the 5th, with Attaway doubling to center and Megan Heal (San Jose, Calif.) singling through the left side.
Whitney finished 3-4 with three runs scored. Attaway was 2-2 scoring once and driving in four and Sierra Rodriguez (Whittier, Calif.) was 2-4 with a run scored.
Game 2 (W, 8-6)
Whittier kept the bats going in game two putting up eight runs on 11 hits. They went on top in the 2nd with five runs coming across on four hits. Whitney led off the inning drawing a walk and moved up to second after a Jannelle Ha (Arcadia, Calif.) bunt single. Attaway was then hit by a pitch that loaded the bases and that then led to a Hayley Wishner (Chino, Calif.) single to center that plated two.
But the big inning didn't end there as Alli Fonseca (Pico Rivera, Calif.) singled to second, which scored another. A double steal soon after plated Wishner and Rodriguez capped off the scoring with a single up the middle.
Puget Sound finally got on the scoreboard in the 4th as Oda drove a double to right center on two outs that brought two across cutting the deficit to three. Whittier added insurance in the 6th with a three-spot that proved crucial in the end. Cooley singled down the right field line that plated Jade Sanchez (Whittier, Calif.) and Rodriguez who each reached earlier on singles. Then Natalia Sanchez (Chino Hills, Calif.) stepped in with a big double to left that moved the score 8-2.
In the 7th, UPS rallied bringing across four runs on four hits. Oda led off the inning with a solo shot to right center. They then loaded the bases after a walk and two singles and then earned another RBI with Gott singling through the left side. This forced Amanda Melodia (Placentia, Calif.) out of the game, giving way to Casanas who came in and got three of the next five batters to help WC hold on for the two run victory.
Melodia picked up her second win on the season going 6.0 innings giving up six runs on nine hits. Casanas tallied her second straight save coming in relief in the 7th striking out two.
Rodriguez finished 3-4 with a run scored and RBI with Wishner going 1-3 with a run scored and two RBI's. Cooley was 1-4 scoring once and driving in two, and Ha was 2-4, scoring once.
