WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Softball team allowed just two runs over two games as they picked up a huge sweep over Cal Lutheran University Saturday afternoon at Palmer Field.
Game 1 (W, 10-2; 5 Innings)
The bats exploded for the Poets in game one of the doubleheader combining for ten runs on ten hits. Brittany Attaway (Claremont, Calif.) led the effort going 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI and Jade Sanchez (Whittier, Calif.) tossed in a 2-3 effort scoring once.
Marialena Ahern (Fremont, Calif.) who is in her fourth game back from injury put together a nice game going 1-3, scoring once and driving in three, which included a three-run blast in the 5th that ended the game.
Trailing 1-0 after a solo shot from Leyva in the 2nd, Whittier responded with two of their own in the bottom half of the frame with Kaitlyn Garza (Chino, Calif.) doubling to left center. Whittier then strung together five runs on four hits and capitalized on a Regal error in the 3rd moving the score to 7-1. Sanchez started things off with a single through the left side before stealing second. Kacey Whitney (Cypress, Calif.) then singled to left center and that then led to back to back RBI's from Attaway and Alli Fonseca (Pico Rivera, Calif.) who both registered hits. Hayley Wishner (Chino, Calif.) then stepped in and loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch and then two wild pitches would bring across another two runs. Garza was then hit by a pitch that kept the inning alive and then Sierra Rodriguez (Whittier, Calif.) would drive in the final run with a fielder's choice.
Sam Casanas (La Habra, Calif.) picked up the win going a complete game giving up two runs on six hits. She improves to 2-2 on the season.
Garza had a 1-3 effort with two RBI's. Rodriguez was 1-3 scoring once and driving in another and Fonseca was 1-2 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Game 2 (W, 1-0; 8 Innings)
The second game was a pitchers dual between Amanda Melodia (Placentia, Calif.) and Olivia Serrano. Melodia threw the complete game shutout giving up just four hits, while striking out three as she improves to 3-3 on the season.
It took 8.0 innings for the Poets to score, which they did in dramatic fashion with a walk-off double from Attaway. With one out, Ahern started the rally off with a single through the left side. Sanchez followed with a single through the right side moving a runner into scoring position and Attaway stepped in two batters later with two outs driving a double to left center that scored the game-winning run.
Attaway finished the game going 2-4 with an RBI. Jannelle Ha (Arcadia, Calif.) was 2-2 and Ahern, Sanchez, Wishner and Fonseca were each 1-3.
Whittier returns to non-conference action this Tuesday, March 20 when they take on Hamline University in a doubleheader with game times set for 12:00pm and 2:00pm.
