SCIAC Athlete of the Week

WHITTIER, Calif. – Senior Outfielder Alli Fonseca (Pico Rivera, Calif.) was just named the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Athlete of the Week in the 12th Week Voting announced by the conference office Monday.

The Whittier College Softball team has now earned Athlete of the Week Honors back-to-back weeks with Brittany Attaway (Claremont, Calif.) receiving recognition last week.

Fonseca, a Pico Rivera native helped the Purple & Gold to a 4-0 week that featured SCIAC sweeps of Pomona-Pitzer (6-4, 10-9) and Cal Lutheran (11-0, 7-6). For the week, Fonseca hit .727 (8-for-11) and had a SLG% of 1.425.  She also added five runs scored, a triple, and two home runs to go along with nine RBI's.

In game one against the Sagehens, Fonseca was 1-2 with a run scored and three runs batted in, which came in the 4th, when she hit a towering homerun to dead center that put WC on top 3-1, a lead they wouldn't relinquish.  She kept the bat going in game two of the doubleheader going 2-3, this time scoring twice and again driving in three.  Her second homerun on the weekend came in this game, this time in the 5th, capping off a nine-run comeback for the Poets.  WC trailed 9-6 in the frame but Fonseca stepped in and drove a three-run blast to dead center that tied up the game, which ultimately led to the Poets winning the game the very next inning.

Then to cap off the weekend, she went 5-for-6 against Cal Lutheran, which included a perfect 3-3 effort in game one, while totaling two runs scored and three RBI's.
