WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Softball team wrapped up their 2018 regular season Saturday as they swept Occidental College 7-2 and 9-0 at Palmer Field.

The Purple & Gold recognized their four seniors Kaitlyn Garza (Chino, Calif.), Marialena Ahern (Fremont, Calif.), Nicole Briedis (San Mateo, Calif.), and Alli Fonseca (Pico Rivera, Calif.) prior to game one and they sent them off in impressive fashion.

With the sweep the Poets improve to 25-14-1, 18-10 SCIAC and have now clinched the No. 2 seed in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Post Season Tournament.

Game 1 (W, 7-2)

The Tigers jumped out in front in the top half of the 2nd but that quick lead evaporated as Whittier would come back with one of their own in the bottom half of the inning off the bat of Fonseca who would porch one to tie the game.

Oxy regained the lead with a single run in the 4th but again the Poets would respond this time bringing across three runs on three hits, capped off with singles from Hannah Angileri (San Jose, Calif.) and Kacey Whitney (Cypress, Calif.).

WC led 4-2 and then tacked on insurance in the 5th capitalizing on an Oxy miscue.  Then in the 6th, Brittany Attaway (Claremont, Calif.) put the game out of reach with a base knock that scored Ahern.

Sam Casanas (La Habra, Calif.) threw her third straight complete game giving up two runs (one earned) on nine hits.  She moves to 8-6.  Offensively, Whitney finished 3-4 with an RBI.  Fonseca was 2-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in and Ahern and Attaway recorded multi-hit games and combined for two runs scored and a run batted in.

Game 2 (W, 9-0)

The bats remained hot in game two of the doubleheader as Whittier picked up the clean sweep.  Freshman Amanda Melodia (Placentia, Calif.) threw a complete game shutout, surrendering just two hits as she improves to 10-5.

All nine of the Poets runs came in the first two innings.  In the 1st, Whittier added four runs on five hits led by Whitney doubling to right field and being followed by a Sierra Rodriguez (Whittier, Calif.) single to right.  Two quick outs soon after put the Poets in a hole with runners on.  But they didn't back down as Attaway, Jade Sanchez (Whittier, Calif.), and Hayley Wishner (Chino, Calif.) would go back-back-to-back putting WC on top 4-0.

The very next inning, Whittier added to their lead this time thanks to the long ball.  Whitney led off the inning with a double to left center and was followed by a Rodriguez single up the middle.  With runners on first and second Ahern then stepped in and drove them all in with a three-run blast.  But it didn't stop there as Fonseca would follow with a triple to center followed immediately by Attaway who would send a two-run blast to right that put the finishing touches on the big inning.

Attaway finished 2-2 scoring twice and driving in three.  Ahern was 1-3 with a run scored and three RBI's.  Whitney and Rodriguez were each 2-2 combining for four runs scored and Sanchez and Fonseca were each 1-2, each scoring once.

Whittier returns to the diamond this Friday, May 4 when they take part in the SCIAC Post Season Tournament.  They enter as the No. 2 seed and will take on Pomona-Pitzer beginning at 4:00pm on the campus of the University of La Verne.
