REDLANDS, Calif. – It was a busy week for the Whittier College Softball team playing six games, which included No. 3 Ithaca and then back to back days with Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competition.

After a split with the Leopards Saturday the Purple & Gold traveled to the University of Redlands Sunday where they split again falling in game one 4-3 before rolling the Bulldogs 9-0 in game two.  Whittier remains at .500 at 8-8-1, 5-5 SCIAC and currently sits in a tie for 3rd with the University of La Verne and Chapman University.

Game 1 (L, 4-3)

It was a battle in game one, remaining scoreless over the first four innings.  Redlands was able to break through in the 5th with two and then tacked on another the very next inning moving the score to 3-0.

But the Poets didn't go away quietly bringing across three in the top half of the 7th that tied things up.  Megan Heal (San Jose, Calif.) started the rally off with a single to right center.  Her replacement Taylor Whitney (Orange, Calif.) was able to move up to second following a groundout by Yolanda Oregel (Anaheim, Calif.) and then to third with a flyout by Jade Sanchez (Whittier, Calif.).  With two outs Naomi Martinez (Marina Del Rey, Calif.) stepped in as a pinch hitter and came up huge for WC doubling to center that brought in one.  The very next batter, Jannelle Ha (Arcadia, Calif.) came up with her biggest swing of the season hammering a two-run shot to left that tied the game up.

But this comeback would be thwarted in the bottom half of the 7th as Redlands would use two doubles from Curtis and Smith that sent them to a walk-off win.

Sam Casanas (La Habra, Calif.) who has been pitching red-hot was tagged with the loss dropping to 5-3.  She went a complete game giving up four runs on 11 hits.  Kacey Whitney (Cypress, Calif.) finished 2-for-3.  Ha was 1-for-3 scoring once and driving in two and Sanchez was 1-for-3.

Game 2 (W, 9-0; 5 Innings)

The second game was a complete 180 for the Purple & Gold putting up nine runs on 11 hits, ending the game after five innings.  Alexis Vargas (Pomona, Calif.) threw her best game of the season, picking up her first win after throwing a shutout giving up five hits.

Whittier put up a run in the 2nd and 3rdBrittany Attaway (Claremont, Calif.) started the scoring off with a solo shot to right field.  The very next inning with two outs, Whitney drove in Ha with a sacrifice fly to center that moved the score to 2-0.

The game was put out of reach in the 4th with WC putting up a seven spot on six hits.  They strung together six consecutive base knocks from Emily Facio (Chino, Calif.), Ha, Brianna MaGee (Torrance, Calif.), Whitney, and Hayley Wishner (Chino, Calif.), capped off with a double from Attaway.

MaGee had a strong game at the top spot going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.  Attaway was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, two RBI's and a walk and Ha was 2-for-2 coming around twice.  Whitney finished the game 1-for-2 with a run and two RBI's.

Whittier has two days off before returning to their non-conference schedule hosting Denison University this Wednesday, March 20.  Game times set for 12:00pm and 2:00pm.
