ORANGE, Calif. – The Whittier College Softball team fell unlucky Saturday getting swept by Chapman University 5-2 and 10-9.

The Purple & Gold have now dropped four straight and move to 10-16-1, 7-11 SCIAC.  The last time these two teams met the Poets pulled off the sweep at Palmer Field.

Game 1 (L, 5-2)

Chapman took an early lead in Game 1 and then stretched it to 4-0 after the 3rd.  They tacked on a solo run in the 4th capitalizing on a Poet error and despite Whittier getting two runs in the 5th behind a Brianna MaGee (Torrance, Calif.) triple to right center that plated Jannelle Ha (Arcadia, Calif.) and Emily Facio (Chino, Calif.) the Panthers were able to hold on for the three-run victory.

Sam Casanas (La Habra, Calif.) earned the loss going 3.0 innings giving up four runs on six hits.  She drops to 5-6.  MaGee led the offense going 2-for-4 with two RBI's.  Facio and Ha were each 1-for-3 and Brittany Attaway (Claremont, Calif.) added three plate appearances with three walks.

Game 2 (L, 10-9)

In the second game of the doubleheader Chapman again jumped out on top this time using a two-run shot from Mykala Tokunaga.  The very next inning though Whittier responded with five-runs on three hits.  Attaway led off the inning with a walk and was followed by Megan Heal (San Jose, Calif.) and Ashlei Sanchez (San Dimas, Calif.) each getting hit by pitches that loaded the bases.  Yolanda Oregel (Anaheim, Calif.) then drew a walk that brought in one and then the flood gates opened with Facio, Sierra Rodriguez (Whittier, Calif.), and MaGee all collecting base hits that brought in another three.  The final run came off the bat of Kacey Whitney (Cypress, Calif.) who grounded out on the infield.

This 5-2 lead though wouldn't hold as CU would get two back in the 3rd with Tong driving in a pair with a single.  In the 4th Hayley Wishner (Chino, Calif.) and Heal combined for two hits that scored two that extended the lead back to three.  But again the Panthers were able to storm back with two in the bottom half of the inning and then another two in the 5th to go on top 10-7.

WC attempted a comeback in the 6th bringing across a pair with Attaway connecting for a solo shot to right center and Sanchez doubling to left that scored Hannah Angileri (San Jose, Calif.).  But it would end there as CU was able to go 1-2-3 in the 7th to secure the sweep.

Alexis Vargas (Pomona, Calif.) got the start going 3.1 innings giving up seven runs on seven hits. She was relieved by Amanda Melodia (Placentia, Calif.) who threw the final 0.2 innings giving up three runs on two hits, while picking up her third loss on the season.

MaGee finished 2-for-5 scoring once and driving in another.  Attaway was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI, while drawing two walks.  Heal finished 1-for-2 with a run scored and a run batted in and Sanchez was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Whittier returns to the diamond this Friday, April 12 when they host the University of Redlands beginning at 2:00pm and 4:00pm.
