WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Softball team put together yet again an amazing doubleheader sweep, this time over Cal Lutheran University 11-10 and 11-2 extending their winning streak to four games.

The Purple & Gold stay within striking distance of a SCIAC Post Season berth as they improve to 14-16-1, 11-11 SCIAC.  They currently sit in a tie for 4th in the SCIAC Standings with La Verne.

Game 1 (W, 11-10; 8-Innings)

CLU struck first in their opening at-bats, highlighted by a solo shot from Marinesi.  Whittier though came back in the bottom half of the inning with their own two-run blast off the bat of Brittany Attaway (Claremont, Calif.) that tied things up.

The Regals added another in the 3rd and then a five-spot in the 4th to go on top 8-2 but this lead wouldn't hold as the Purple & Gold would rally for six runs over the next two innings that tied things up.  Brianna MaGee (Torrance, Calif.) scored the first run after an opening triple to right center and being driven in by a Kacey Whitney (Cypress, Calif.) groundout.  Then in the 6th, the Poets kept the offense going scoring five runs on two hits, while capitalizing on three CLU errors.

Whitney added one of the hits with a double to left center and Yolanda Oregel (Anaheim, Calif.) and Megan Heal (San Jose, Calif.) each reached on miscues that brought in a couple other runs.  With the game tied up, CLU managed to regain their lead in extras on a sacrifice fly, a pair of hits and a WC error.  But in the bottom half of the inning Whittier struck back with Attaway hammering the game-tying two-run blast followed by a Jade Sanchez (Whittier, Calif.) single through the right side, a Hannah Angileri (San Jose, Calif.) single up the middle and a walk-off base hit from Ashlei Sanchez (San Dimas, Calif.) through the left side.

Amanda Melodia (Placentia, Calif.) got the start and went 7.0 innings giving up nine runs (one earned) on 10 hits.  Sam Casanas (La Habra, Calif.) came in relief and threw the final inning giving up one run on one hit, while picking up the win.

Whitney finished 3-for-5 scoring three times and driving in three.  Attaway was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, four runs batted in and three walks and Emily Facio (Chino, Calif.) was 2-for-4 scoring once.

Game 2 (W, 11-2; 5-Innings)

Whittier needed only five innings to pick up the sweep over the Regals. It was a high scoring first inning with a combined six runs being scored.  CLU got on top with two runs in their opening at-bats but in the bottom half of the inning the Purple & Gold struck for four with Whitney connecting with a two-run shot that plated MaGee who reached with a double to right center.  After a pair of singles from Attaway and Sanchez, Jannelle Ha (Arcadia, Calif.) singled through the right side moving the score to 4-2.

The Poets added to their lead in the 3rd with another five runs this time using three hits and two CLU errors that pushed the lead to 9-2.  Then in the 4th, the game was put away with Heal adding a sacrifice fly and Oregel doubling to right center.

Casanas got the start and went 4.0 innings giving up two runs on three hits.  She also added a pair of strikeouts as she improved to 7-6.

Ha finished 2-for-3 scoring once and driving in a pair.  Sanchez was 2-for-2 scoring three times, Heal was 1-for-2 with a run and four RBI's and Attaway was 1-for-1 scoring twice, driving in one and walking twice.

Whittier returns to the diamond in a big Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Showdown with La Verne this Saturday at Palmer Field.  Game times set for 12:00pm and 2:00pm.
