WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Softball team remains hot at home as they swept the University of La Verne at Palmer Field Saturday winning 8-4 and 4-2.

The Purple & Gold have now stretched their winning streak to six games and are now 13-7-1 at home and posted a 3-1 record on the season against the Leos.  They currently sit 4th in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) standings with a 16-16-1, 13-11 SCIAC record.

Game 1 (W, 8-4)

Whittier got on the scoreboard quickly in game one with two-runs in the 1st both coming with two outs.  A pair of walks to Brianna MaGee (Torrance, Calif.) and Brittany Attaway (Claremont, Calif.) followed by a wild pitch put two runners in scoring position.  Jade Sanchez (Whittier, Calif.) then followed with a base knock up the middle plating one and then after a bobble by the second baseman on a steal attempt, Attaway was able to come in.

ULV got both runs back in the 2nd and 3rd innings.  In the bottom half of the 3rd, Whittier went back on top capitalizing on an error by the catcher.  Attaway started things off with a walk before stealing second.  Naomi Martinez (Marina Del Rey, Calif.) followed getting hit by a pitch and after a sacrifice bunt by Sanchez moving both runners up, Attaway was able to come in following the ULV miscue.

WC opened the game up in the 4th with a three spot coming on four hits.  Kacey Whitney (Cypress, Calif.) drove in the first with a single to right center and Martinez came through with two outs with a single to center that plated the next two moving the score to 6-2.  La Verne got within two at 6-4 in the 6th following back-to-back sacrifice flies.  But that's as close as they would get as Whittier would tack on two in the bottom half of the inning with Martinez driving a bases loaded single through the right side followed by a Jannelle Ha (Arcadia, Calif.) single on the infield.

Ha was in an unfamiliar spot finding herself in the circle and what a game she threw going a complete game giving up four runs (one earned) on seven hits.  She collects her first win on the season.

Attaway led the offense again proving tough for opposing pitchers.  She was 1-for-2 drawing a pair of walks, while scoring four times.  Whitney was 1-for-4 scoring twice and driving in one and Sierra Rodriguez (Whittier, Calif.) and MaGee were each 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Game 2 (W, 4-2)

Whittier was forced to play catch-up in game two of the doubleheader in the low scoring affair.  La Verne went on top 2-0 in the 3rd following a pair of singles from Kendricks and Navarro.  But this lead wouldn't hold for the Leos as Whittier would come back with four in the bottom half of the 4thNatalia Sanchez (Chino Hills, Calif.) started things off with a solo shot.  Sanchez followed reaching on an error by the center fielder and moved over to third after a Ha sacrifice bunt.  The very next batter, Rodriguez doubled down the left field line bringing in one and three batters later Whitney doubled to right center adding the two insurance runs Whittier would need to complete the sweep.

Sam Casanas (La Habra, Calif.) threw a complete game giving up two runs on 10 hits.  She improves to 8-6.  Whitney finished 1-for-2 driving in two and walking twice.  Sanchez was 1-for-4 scoring once and driving in another and Sanchez and Rodriguez each added 1-for-3 efforts.

Whittier travels this Friday, April 26 when they go to take on Occidental College with game times set for 2:00pm and 4:00pm.
