CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College Softball team earned their biggest win of the season Friday afternoon in the opening round of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Post Season Tournament upsetting the top seeded Athenas of Claremont-M-S 8-3.

The Purple & Gold are red hot as of late winning three straight against CMS, which included sweeping them on Senior Day this past Saturday.  They have now won 10 of their last 11 and improve to 20-17-1, 16-12 SCIAC

After falling behind 2-0 Whittier erupted for a seven spot in the top half of the 2nd coming on five hits and an error.  Brittany Attaway (Claremont, Calif.) started things off with a double to right field and then moved over to third due to a wild pitch.  Naomi Martinez (Marina Del Rey, Calif.) followed with a walk and Jannelle Ha (Arcadia, Calif.) came up clutch with a two-RBI double to right center that tied things up.  But Whittier wasn't done there as Natalia Sanchez (Chino Hills, Calif.) followed with a walk before a foul out by Ashlei Sanchez (San Dimas, Calif.) would be deep enough to plate Martinez.

After a fielder's choice put two outs on the board the flood gates opened with the top of the order Brianna MaGee (Torrance, Calif.) singling to left that brought in, Kacey Whitney (Cypress, Calif.) drawing a walk and Jade Sanchez (Whittier, Calif.) connecting for a pair of RBI's with a single to center.  But the inning wasn't done as Attaway stepped in against a new pitcher and belted a single through the right side that brought in one before a wild pitch scored another.

CMS got one back in the 3rd but that would be the last run plated as Whittier would add an insurance run in the 4th off the bat of Sanchez who singled up the middle scoring MaGee.

This would be enough for sophomore Ha who again silenced the CMS bats for the second time in less than a week.  She threw a complete game giving up three runs on six hits.  She improves to a perfect 3-0.

Whittier collected 10 hits on the afternoon with Attaway going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.  Sanchez was 2-for-4 with a run and three runs batted in and MaGee was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Whittier returns to the diamond tomorrow, Saturday, May 4 at Claremont-M-S as they take on No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer beginning at 1:30pm.
