CLAREMONT, Calif. – At the conclusion of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, Whittier College senior outfielder Kacey Whitney (Cypress, Calif.) was named the SCIAC Tournament MVP.
She helped lead the Whittier College Softball team to the program's second SCIAC Tournament Title and third trip to the NCAA Division III National Championships. The Purple & Gold went 4-1 during the three-day event with a pair of wins coming against Claremont-M-S and Pomona-Pitzer.
In the opening match-up with the top-seeded Athenas she went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk. The very next day she posted a 1-for-5 effort against Pomona-Pitzer in the extra-inning battle before going hitless against CMS in an elimination game. She did however score once in that contest. But when it counted she came up clutch going 3-for-4 in the first game against the Sagehens, which helped lift the Poets to the Championship Game. In the final match-up against PP with the winner going to the National Championships, Whitney was 1-for-2 scoring once and drawing a walk. But what separated her among everyone else was her defensive play in the 7th Inning of that final game.
With runners on the corners and two-outs in a one-run game, Whitney secured the final out with a running catch, which carried her over the right center field fence.
