WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College softball team earned academic recognition from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) for its work in the classroom earlier this week. The Poets ranked 98th out of 117 Division III schools with a team GPA of 3.27 and nine student-athletes earned Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar Athletes accolades.
The rankings and honors recognize the academic prowess of softball teams across the Association's membership categories. NCAA Division III led the way with 1,928 student-athletes earning a 3.5 grade-point average or higher for 2018-19. NCAA Division I and Division II followed with 1,769 and 1,306 honorees. High School weighted and High School unweighted earned 1,225 and 793 distinctions. NAIA and two-year programs each amassed 570 recipients.
The nine Whittier student-athletes honored for having a GPA of 3.5 or above is the third most out of all the SCIAC schools. Chapman led the conference with 15 recipients and Redlands was second with 11.
Among those honored for leading the way in the classroom was Brittany Attaway (Claremont, Calif.), Hannah Angileri (San Jose, Calif.), Sam Casanas (La Habra, Calif.), Sarah Gross (Chula Vista, Calif.), Jannelle Ha (Arcadia, Calif.), Naomi Martinez (Marina Del Rey, Calif.), Amanda Melodia (Placentia, Calif.), Alexis Vargas (Pomona, Calif.), and Hayley Wishner (Chino, Calif.).
