Poets Win Eight Events; Split with Caltech and Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's & Women's Track & Field teams took part in the first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) meet of 2018 out at the University of Redlands hosted by Caltech. 

At the conclusion of the day both the men and women finished 1-1 beating Caltech but losing to Redlands.  The men went 114-28 over the Beavers and fell 122-41 to the Bulldogs.  On the women's side they beat Caltech 120-25 and fell 115-47 to Redlands. 

Out of the eight winning events, half came on the men's side and half on the women.  Julissa Tobias (Norwalk, Calif.) started off the day winning the 1500m going 4:46.44 but was pushed by Anahy Covarrubias (Los Angeles, Calif.) who finished 2nd with a 4:49.95.

Jessica Iribe (Buena Park, Calif.) was the next winner in the 5000m going 17:52.56.  Freshman Elyse Espe (Wishon, Calif.) took the top spot in the 400mH with a time of 1:09.48 and Sabrina Van Beek (Atascadero, Calif.) took home top honors in the discus with a mark of 33.24. 

Other quality finishes on the women's side included Emily Apodaca (Whittier, Calif.) (1:01.12) and Tiazha Hogue (1:04.37) going 3-4 in the 400m.  Piper Lowinger (Whittier, Calif.) taking 2nd in the 100mH with a 15.41.  Jessica McCollum (Aurora, CO) going 3rd in the 3000m Steeplechase (12:39.05).  The 4x400 Relay team of Espe, Apodaca, Annie Ortiz (Whittier, Calif.), and Covarrubias taking 2nd (4:10.67).  Freshman Hannah Duran-Wright (Palm Springs, Calif.) placing 2nd in the Long Jump with a mark of 5.17m before going 3rd in the triple jump (10.62m) right in front of Caitlin Greenup (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) who took 4th (10.38m).  Van Beek also took 2nd in the Shot Put (10.36m).

On the men's side, Julian Sandoval (El Monte, Calif.) continues to impress as he took home top recognition in the 1500m with a time of 4:06.49.  Freshman Benjamin White (Whittier, Calif.) joined Sandoval in the distance winning the 5000m with a 15:36.73.  Then to cap off the top place finishes, David Bean (La Habra, Calif.) and Garrett Silva (Whittier, Calif.) tied for 1st in the Pole Vault with a mark of 4.40m. 

Other notable finishes included Gabriel Pridgen-Daniels (Sacramento, Calif.) in the 200m taking 3rd with a 22.70.  Ray Ray Roberson (Albuquerque, NM) took 3rd in the 400m with a 51.16.  Hakim Williams Jr. (Riverside, Calif.) and Craig Rogers (Whittier, Calif.) went 2-3 in the 110mH with times of 15.96 and 16.43, respectively.  Natnael Yitayew (San Diego, Calif.) took 3rd in the 400mH with a time of 1:00.13.  The 4x400 Relay took 2nd with a 3:29.25, which included Jay Smith (Bellflower, Calif.), Roberson, Eli Bedford (Los Angeles, Calif.), and Michael Badillo (Brea, Calif.).  Rogers took 3rd in the High Jump going 1.75m and then in the throws, Adrien Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) took 2nd in the Shot Put (11.64m), Somaan Iqbal took 3rd in the Discus (33.99m) 2nd in the Javelin (37.96m), and Theodore Ragsac (West Hills, Calif.) would finish 4th in the Hammer (32.23m).                               

The Whittier College Distance runners are up next for the Track & Field team as they take part in the Occidental Distance Carnival this Saturday, March 10 hosted by Occidental College.
