Women’s Track & Field has record breaking SCIAC No. 1

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Track & Field team opened up Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play over the weekend taking part in SCIAC No. 1 with head to head match-ups against Pomona-Pitzer, Occidental College and Chapman University.

The Purple & Gold managed to beat Chapman 99-44 and threatened Pomona-Pitzer (92.5-64.5) but couldn't gain any ground with Occidental (104-53).

Across the day the Poets battled the rain but were able to take home four first place finishes, while seeing a record breaking performance from sophomore Elyse Espe (Wishon, Calif.) who won the 400m Hurdles (1:04.31), while becoming the new Whittier College record holder.

Gabriella Torres Joubert (Tacoma, WA) came up short in the 400m coming in 2nd with a time of 1:00.78.  She also had a strong performance in the High Jump taking 3rd with a mark of 1.40m.  Elizabeth Donnelly (Langley, VA) put together a 2nd place finish in the 800m with a time of 2:23.18.  She now moves up to No. 7 on the Whittier College All-Time Lists.

Jeanie Cox (Chino Hills, Calif.) led the distance taking 3rd in the 5000m (19:32.33) and Melissa Tobias (Norwalk, Calif.) would go 3rd in the Pole Vault with a mark of 2.60m.  The last top performance on the day in the running events was the 4x400 Relay team of Torres Joubert, Espe, Julia Gonzalez (Yorba Linda, Calif.), and Donnelly.  They took top honors with a time of 4:08.66, beating the 2nd place finishers by eight seconds.

In the throws, Vanessa Martinez (La Mirada, Calif.) had a big day in the shotput taking 1st with a mark of 11.29m.  She has now solidified her spot at No. 5 in the Whittier College record books.  Sabrina Van Beek joined Martinez in the shot put taking 3rd (10.16m) but did her damage in the Discus winning the event with a 34.63m throw.  She also took 2nd overall in the Hammer (38.66m) and now strengthens her 6th All-Time standing.                   

Other notable participants include Tiazha Hogue (Redlands, Calif.) in the 200m (5th – 27.57), Espe in the 100m Hurdles (6th – 17.29), the 4x100 Relay team of Mariah Baker (San Gabriel, Calif.), Gonzalez, Danielle Guardado (Covina, Calif.), and Hogue (3rd- 51.47), and Caitlin Greenup (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) in the Long Jump (4th – 4.76m) and Triple Jump (5th – 10.24m).            

Whittier returns to competition this Saturday, March 9 when the distance runners compete in the Oxy Distance Carnival, hosted by Occidental College.
