LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A group of athletes from the Whittier College Women's Track & Field team took part in the Oxy Distance Carnival and Spring Break Classic over the weekend.
Senior Anahy Covarrubias (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the Purple & Gold taking part in the 800m posting a 3rd overall finish with a time of 2:13.93. With this mark she broke the Whittier College school record and currently sits with the fastest time in Division III.
In the throws, Sabrina Van Beek (Atascadero, Calif.) was a beast in three events placing 2nd in the Discus with a mark of 35.84m. She now betters her 6th place standing all-time. She also went 7th in the Shot Put (10.19m) and 7th in the Hammer Throw (37.60m).
She was joined by freshman Sasha Rojo (Rio Rancho, NM) who went 19th in the Shot Put (8.20m) before finishing 10th overall in the Hammer Throw (33.95m). She now moves to 9th all-time in the Whittier College record books.
In the 400m, Elyse Espe (Wishon, Calif.) finished 10th (1:00.29) and was joined by Danielle Guardado (Covina, Calif.) (33rd – 1"05.93) and Megan Summers (Martinsburg, WV) (39th – 1:08.49). In the women's triple jump, Caitlin Greenup (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) posted a 9th place finish with a mark of 10.50m and was followed by Jillian Weber (San Ramon, Calif.) who finished 10th (10.27m). Weber now moves up to 5th all-time in the Whittier College record books.
Whittier returns to competition next Saturday, March 23 when they take part in the PLNU Collegiate Invitational at Point Loma Nazarene.
