Small contingent of athletes compete at Oxy Distance Carnival

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A small contingent of athletes from the Whittier College Men's Track & Field team took part in the Oxy Distance Carnival and Spring Break Classic over the weekend.

Benjamin White (Whittier, Calif.) led the Purple & Gold competing in the 10,000m.  He raced to a 4th place finish with a time of 30:55.61.  With this mark he broke the Whittier College school record and currently has the fastest time in Division III.

Hakim Williams Jr. (Riverside, Calif.) had a strong day in the 110m Hurdles placing 3rd overall with a 15.78 and Garrett Silva (Whittier, Calif.) in the Pole Vault finished 4th with a mark of 4.55m.

Gabriel Contreras led the throwers going 11th in the Shot Put with a mark of 12.22m, while Shazel Sakr (Montebello, Calif.) added a 13th place finish (12.16m).  Other scorers on the day included Craig Rogers (Whittier, Calif.) in the 110m Hurdles (6th – 16.09), a trio of Poets in the 1500m (Ben Arrendondo (Sylmar, Calif.); 54th – 4:18.39, Ricardo Lira-Martinez (Bassett, Calif.); 81st – 4:32.22, Ryan Orton (Ontario, Calif.); 82nd – 4:32.25).

In the 400m, five Poets took part led by Gabriel Pridgen-Daniels (Sacramento, Calif.) who went 33rd with a time of 51.98.  He was joined by Michael Badillo (Brea, Calif.) (50th – 53.44), Mason Gaw (Redlands, Calif.) (52nd – 53.78), Kurt Vanegas (Riverside, Calif.) (57th – 54.54), and Paul Trejo (Whittier, Calif.) (59th – 54.92).          

Whittier returns to competition next Saturday, March 23 when they take part in the PLNU Collegiate Invitational at Point Loma Nazarene.
