PASADENA, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Track & Field team had a strong performance on Saturday during SCIAC No. 2 barely missing out on an upset of Cal Lutheran University 80-78 before falling to Claremont-M-S 103.50-55.50.
The Purple & Gold won six events (400m, 5,000m, 110mH, Long Jump, High Jump, and Pole Vault).
Hakim Williams Jr. (Riverside, Calif.) picked up major points for Whittier winning the Long Jump with a new PR of 21'4". He then returned to take top marks in the High Jump (5'10.75"), and the 110mH (15.76) then finished his day on the 4x100 Relay team joining Gabriel Pridgen Daniels (Sacramento, Calif.), Ray Ray Roberson (Albuquerque, NM), and Cooper Tirado (Kupolei, HI) who finished 2nd overall with a time of 42.72.
Tirado led the running events winning the 400m with a time of 48.6. He now ranks No. 1 in SCIAC, No. 1 in the West Region, and No. 6 in Division III. He then capped off his day in the 200m placing 3rd overall with a time of 22.65. In the distance Benjamin White (Whittier, Calif.) picked up points in the 5000m winning the event with a 15:31.13 beating the second place finisher by almost nine seconds.
Myles Malone (Prince Georges County, MD) joined Williams Jr. in the High Jump placing 2nd overall with a mark of 5'8.75". Garrett Silva (Whittier, Calif.) continues to impress on the Pole Vault this time with a mark of 15'9.75", which set the Whittier College school record, while at the same time winning the event and ranking him No. 1 in SCIAC, No. 1 in the West Region, and No. 5 in Division III.
Shazel Sakr (Montebello, Calif.) led the throwers placing 2nd in the Shot Put with a throw of 12.33m and then went 2nd in the Discus (36.49m).
Whittier hosts their first Invite this Friday, April 5 when they welcome in Chapman University, St. Thomas (MN), Augsburg (MN), Merritt College, unattached and professional athletes and other SCIAC programs for the Whittier Twilight Meet. Field events start at 3:30pm and Track Events at 4:00pm.
