ORANGE, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Basketball team suffered a tough loss on the road Wednesday night within Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action to Chapman University 80-54.
The Purple & Gold have now lost two in a row dropping to 6-10, 3-4 SCIAC, while Chapman remains perfect in SCIAC play moving to 11-3, 6-0 SCIAC.
Despite giving up 80 points on the night, the second most to an opponent on the season, Whittier still managed to force 20 turnovers turning them into 18 points. Nobody hit double figures on the evening for the Poets as Emily Guerena (Montebello, Calif.) led the offensive unit with nine off the bench to go with seven boards. Daisy Cardenas (Santa Clarita, Calif.) and Cali Cubel (Oceanside, Calif.) each added eight apiece and Kayli Schwenke (Torrance, Calif.) registered five.
Whittier was put in a hole early being outscored 20-8 over the first ten minutes. The Panthers used an 11-2 run to start things off and then ended the frame off on a 9-2 spurt that gave them a big advantage. Whittier found some offense in the second quarter adding 12 points with six coming from Cubel going 3-4 from the field but CU was able to tack on another 25 to take a 45-30 lead at the break.
In the third, Chapman continued to pour on the offense adding another 21 points to increase their lead. They then extended it to 37 midway through the fourth and despite the Purple & Gold outscoring Chapman 22-14 with Cardenas lighting it up from deep in the final period it wasn't enough to complete the comeback.
Whittier shot 32% (19-60) from the field and 20% (5-25) from three-point territory. They were outrebounded 44-28 and were at a disadvantage inside being outscored 44-26 in the paint.
Whittier has a bye this weekend and returns to action next Wednesday, January 17 when they host Claremont-M-S with tip-off set for 7:00pm.
