Poets threaten No. 9 George Fox 60-58 in Hawaii

OAHU, HI – The Whittier College Women's Basketball team opened up the Street Shine Invitational in Hawaii Tuesday threatening No. 9 George Fox University 60-58.

Today's game marked the first of four at the Street Shine Invitational, as Whittier, George Fox, Chapman, and Puget Sound all made the trip.

Neither team led by more than six points throughout all four quarters.  The Purple & Gold held a lead or was tied in three of the four quarters.  They edged GFU 14-13 following the opening period and then held that one-point advantage at the break 28-27.  In the third, they opened up a two-point lead outscoring the Bruins 17-16 but couldn't hold on for the upset as they were outscored 17-13 over the final ten minutes allowing GFU to come away with the two-point victory.

Whittier now drops to 5-2, 0-2 SCIAC, while George Fox improves to 8-1, 2-0 NWC.

Cali Cubel (Oceanside, Calif.) was the lone Poet in double figures finishing with 19 points on 5-of-10 shooting.  She also added two rebounds, three assists and three steals. 

Laura Stroud (Ann Arbor, MI) missed out on a double double posting nine points and 10 rebounds and Monica Hanna (Bellflower, Calif.) inside added a nine-point, five rebound effort.

Whittier held the advantage over George Fox in every major category including field goal % (43%-32%), three-point % (27%-24%), free-throw % (72%-50%) and rebounding (42-34).  The crucial stat in the game was turnovers where the Poets turned it over 29 times, which led to 22 points for the Bruins.

There were five ties and thirteen lead changes.  George Fox led by as many as eight, which came in the first quarter when they jumped out in front with eight unanswered.  Whittier held a five-point lead, which came early in the second quarter.     

The Poets will play their final game of the Street Shine Invitational against University of Puget Sound on Wednesday, December 19 at 3:00pm (PST).
