REDLANDS, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Basketball team was a dealt a tough loss on the road Wednesday night as they fell 65-59 to the University of Redlands.
The previous time these two teams met, the Poets pulled off the lopsided 58-44 victory, which came back on December 5. Whittier has now dropped three in a row and move to 7-10, 4-6 SCIAC, while Redlands improves to 8-11, 5-5 SCIAC. The Bulldogs currently own a four-game winning streak.
The Purple & Gold were led by Cali Cubel (Oceanside, Calif.) who poured in 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting to go with a pair of boards, two steals and two blocks. Teani White (Burbank, Calif.) ran the point adding 11 points and eight rebounds and Mia Maglinte (Roseville, Calif.) chipped in with 11 points and four rebounds. Shaeleigh Wright (Long Beach, Calif.) had a solid game with eight points in yet another starting role and Emily Guerena (Montebello, Calif.) added a seven point, five rebound effort off the bench.
Redlands held a slight 13-11 edge after the opening period but opened the game up in the second outscoring the Poets 18-9 to lead 31-20 at the break. Whittier bounced back with a 16-point performance in the third and then outscored the Bulldogs 23-21 over the final ten minutes but it wouldn't be enough to erase the 14-point deficit.
Whittier shot 36.4% from the field and 26.7% from behind the arc. They were edged on the glass 35-34 but won the battle in the paint 28-12. They also earned 11 second chance points and forced 12 Redlands turnovers.
Whittier returns to the court this Saturday, January 26 as they host Chapman University beginning at 5:00pm.
