CHINO, Calif. – Senior Kajal Vitha (Whittier, Calif.) and the Whittier College Women's Golf Team put together an impressive two days at the CMS Invite over the weekend.
The two-day event took place at Los Serranos Golf Club and included six teams (Claremont-M-S, Uni. of Redlands, Uni. of La Verne, Pomona-Pitzer, and UC Santa Cruz). Following 36 holes, the Poets found themselves finishing 2nd overall with a two-day total of 614 (305-309).
No. 9 Claremont-M-S finished on top beating out the Purple & Gold by six strokes. But Whittier was able to edge No. 11 Pomona-Pitzer (3rd - 624) and No. 14 Redlands (4th - 625).
Vitha, who enters her final season with the Poets has been red hot this fall and strung together the two best rounds of her collegiate career to win the Invite by five strokes over Tiffany Hu (Claremont-M-S). Vitha shot par for the tournament shooting -1 on day one (71), which was the first of her career before finishing with a 73 (+1) on the second day of action. The win is the first title for the southpaw during her tenure at Whittier College.
Junior Taylor Beckwith (Turlock, Calif.) and senior Madison Crimi-Demichele (San Jose, Calif.) were the next Poet finishers coming in a tie for 12th. Beckwith went 75-82 and Crimi-Demichele went 77-80.
Sophomore Kamryn Marie Garcia (La Mirada, Calif.) was 15th bouncing back after an opening 86 to post a 74. Then Kainani Ho (Waipahu, HI) in her first appearance on the season placed 25th going 82-85 to round out the scoring.
Whittier has one week of preparations before traveling to North Prescott, AZ early next week, October 8-9 to take part in the ERAU Co-ED Invitational. The two-day event will take place at Antelope Hills Golf Club.
