REDLANDS, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Lacrosse team suffered their first loss of 2017 Friday night putting together a strong first half before giving up 11 goals in the second en route to the 17-5 loss.
Whittier is now 1-1 but have shown a strong fight thus far this season. The first half a combined 10 goals were scored with the Bulldogs holding a slight edge 6-4. But in the second, Whittier was held to just one goal, while surrendering 11.
Neely O'Grady (Lorton, VA) and Nicole Lindke (Pleasanton, Calif.) deadlocked the game twice in the early stages with free position goals. Sadie Pickering added a couple to put UR in front 4-2 until Emily Hansen (Seal Beach, Calif.) would get into the scoring category cutting the deficit to one with a free position goal herself.
But in the second half it was all Bulldogs as they came out and added 11 in a row that put the game out of reach even with Amy Buck (Beaverton, OR) scoring as time expired that gave Whittier their fifth goal.
Rizzotti finished with a goal and three draw controls. Hansen finished with a goal, three groundballs and two draw controls, while O'Grady had a goal on three shots with a groundball and two draw controls.
Madison Topping (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) picked up the loss giving up 11 goals, while totaling seven saves. Redlands held a slight edge on draw controls at 12-10 and outshot Whittier 27-14. The Poets were 3-5 on free-positions and were 8-14 on clear attempts.
Whittier returns home for two games next week as they host Claremont-M-S (Wednesday, March 1 @ 7:00pm) and Pomona-Pitzer (Saturday, March 4 @ 11:00am).
