CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Lacrosse team proved a tough test early in a 16-8 loss to Pomona-Pitzer Wednesday night.

PP opened the game up with four unanswered before the Purple & Gold got onto the scoreboard.  Emily Hansen (Seal beach, Calif.) added both connections going back-to-back with the first being unassisted and the second coming on a man-up free position, which cut the deficit in half.

The Sagehens responded quickly soon after though putting together a little spurt of five in a row that extended their lead to 9-2.  But Lexie Meanor (Sewickley, PA) would have her own answer with 1:03 to play getting fed by Hansen that moved the score to 9-3 at the break.

The offense continued to roll in the second half with WC tacking on another five but they couldn't limit the Sagehens as they would add seven of their own en route to the eight goal victory.

Meanor and Amy Buck (Beaverton, OR) got the scoring started in the second half that pulled Whittier within four making it a game.  Melanie Rizzotti came back at the 21:30 mark to tally her first of the game that kept the Poets in striking distance but that's as close as they would get as PP would quickly gather themselves adding five in a row that put the game out of reach.

Meanor and Neely O'Grady (Lorton, VA) would add goals in the late stages of the game both coming on free positions but in the end it wouldn't be enough as the Sagehens would hold on for the home victory.

Meanor led the offense with three goals and four draw controls.  Hansen had a nice stat line with two goals and two assists that went with a groundball and three draw controls and O'Grady would register a goal, a groundball and three draw controls.

Madison Topping (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) played between the posts and finished with 10 saves against 26 shots.  She also had two caused turnovers.

Whittier was edged 14-12 on draw controls and was outshot on the evening 31-23.  They were 4-8 on free positions and were 12-16 on clear attempts.

Whittier wraps up their 2017 schedule this Saturday, April 22 as they host Chapman University beginning at 11:00am.
