REDLANDS, Calif. – Junior Lexie Meanor (Sewickley, PA) recorded her 100th point in the 2018 season opener for Whittier College Women's Lacrosse as she finished with four goals and a caused turnover in a 16-5 loss to the University of Redlands.
The Bulldogs jumped out in front within the first 90 seconds of the game. Meanor then got into the mix and found the back of the goal at the 23:29 mark that cut the deficit in half and would then add the final tally in the frame with 43 seconds remaining. Between the two goals, UR was able to rattle off nine unanswered, which opened the game up moving the score to 11-2 at the break.
It was a low scoring affair in the second half with a combined eight goals being scored. The Poet defensive unit stood strong allowing just five goals and twelve shots. After two free-position connections by the Bulldogs to open up the final 30:00 minutes, Whittier would see Meanor stop the run with her third of the game being fed by Emily Hansen (Seal Beach, Calif.). But after that, UR would answer once again this time with three straight that moved the score to 16-3.
The final two goals of the game came from Hansen and Meanor, but the deficit was too much to overcome as Whittier would fall by double digits.
Madison Topping (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) got the start and finished with 12 saves against 25 shots. Meanor led the offense with four goals with a caused turnover. Hansen added a goal and two assists with two draw controls and a groundball.
Whittier finished with 10 shots, five coming in each half. They were 13-18 on clears and picked up 11 groundballs. They were also 2-4 on free-positions and won five draw controls.
Whittier has their home opener next Wednesday, February 21 when they host Pomona-Pitzer beginning at 7:00pm.
