WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier defense clamped down in the second half as it limited Claremont-M-S to just six shots but it wasn't enough as the Poets dropped their second straight SCIAC game on Saturday afternoon at the Graham Soccer Field.

The Athenas scored three-goals in the first half and added a penalty kick in the second frame en route to the win. The first scoring strike came at the 14:44 mark off the foot of Rachel Bunting. She was set up with a through-ball by Laura Hagen.

CMS struck again in the 30th minute and added its third of the half at 36:18.

The Poets managed two first half shots to CMS' 14.

In the second half, Whittier's defense didn't give the Athenas much room to maneuver. CMS's six shots was only two better than the Poets' total in the second 45 minutes and didn't result in a goal.

The lone second half goal came at 54:59 on Brittany Pineros' penalty kick.

Megan Wessel made six saves in goal which includes five in the first half.

Andrea Smith and Stephanie Bergstrom led the Poets with two shots apiece.

The Poets return to action on Wednesday, September 22, as they hit the road to face La Verne at 4 pm.
