THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Regals of Cal Lutheran University scored in the 7th minute, then exploded for three second half goals in route to a 4-0 shutout of the Whittier College women's soccer team Wednesday evening.
With the win Cal Lutheran improves to 8-2, 5-0 SCIAC, while Whittier drops to 4-5, 2-3 SCIAC and see their two game winning streak snapped.
All four Regal goals came by way of four different players including Kirsten DiPippo, Kristina Hulse, Taylor Will, and Dani Granholm.
CLU got on the scoreboard first in the 7th minute of play as DiPippo curved in a corner kick that sailed over Whittier goalie Shanna Falch, while glancing off the crossbar. But this would be all Cal Lutheran would be able to gather in the first half as they went into the break up 1-0 after a strong defensive effort put on by Whittier.
Coming out of the break CaLu continued to play aggressively and maintained a majority of the possessions in the second half and gathered three insurance goals early but saw Whittier counter off of a Regal corner kick in the 70th minute that wound up being broken up as a CLU defender came in with the tackle stopping any chance of a Poet goal.
The Regals had a decisive 24-1 advantage on total shots, including a 10-1 margin in the first half. Cal Lutheran put 11 of those 24 shots on goal compared to Whittier who didn't record any.
Falch played all 90:00 of the game in goal for the Poets and finished with seven saves, while CLU keeper Kristin Bailey registered the win without facing a shot.
Prior to Wednesday evening, Whittier earned a pair of back to back wins in conference play achieving wins over Pomona-Pitzer (1-0) and then Occidental (3-1).
Whittier returns home for yet another SCIAC conference match-up as they host the Athena's of Claremont-M-S this Saturday, September 29 beginning at 11:00am.
