WHITTIER, Calif. – Claremont-M-S registered a goal in each half to hand Whittier a 2-1 setback in their SCIAC Conference matchup this morning at the Donald E. Graham Soccer Field. The Poets' goal came from freshman Maegan Garcia.
Claremont-M-S scored in the 23rd minute behind an unassisted goal from Madi Shove who came down on a counter and took a ball in transition before dribbling past a Poet defender to put the Athena's on the scoreboard at 1-0.
The Poet's defensive unit stood strong the rest of the half as junior goalie Shanna Falch turned away five shots helping Whittier go into the half only down one.
CMS held the advantage on shots at 9-4 in the first half behind a plethora of shots from Shaundra Ullman who finished the game with seven.
Coming out in the second, CMS stepped up their intensity and added their second goal of the contest three minutes in when Isabel Lester was given a through ball at the top of the box, which she put into the upper portion of the goal. The Athena's had an opportunity to extend their lead to three when they were awarded a PK in the 78th minute but Falch made a diving save to her right keeping the Poets in striking distance.
Whittier then saw their offense come alive and continued to get scoring opportunities late and finally got through the CMS defense in the 85th minute when freshman Garcia tapped in her first goal of the season off of a ball that scooted away from Athena goalkeeper Hannah Dunham.
This pulled the Purple & Gold within one giving them new life with just under five minutes to play. They made a push looking for the equalizer when Rachel Inouye had a look on goal but her shot ended up wide helping CMS hold on for the one goal victory.
Whittier has the rest of the weekend off before they return next week on Tuesday, October 3 when they host the Bulldogs of the University of Redlands beginning at 7:00pm.
