WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College women's soccer team played to a 0-0 tie at the end of the first half and midway through the second until Sam Thompson lifted the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer to the one goal victory Wednesday evening.

The Poets now drop to 5-10, 3-8 SCIAC, while the Sagehens improve to 6-6-1, 5-5-1 SCIAC.

The Purple & Gold won their first meeting back on September 22 with Pomona-Pitzer 1-0 but this time around the Sagehens were able to squeak a goal in, in the 82nd minute when Thompson received a ball in the box from Ari Sanchez, which she lofted over Poet goalkeeper Shanna Falch for the eventual game winner.

The game opened up as a defensive standoff with a combined six shots being taken (PP-4, WC-2) in the first half, while Pomona-Pitzer held the advantage on corner kicks at 4-0.  The second half continued to be a defensive effort as a combined five shots were taken (PP-4, WC-1), but Pomona-Pitzer was able to keep Whittier from having a clean look on goal as they held Whittier to a mere one shot on goal, while Pomona-Pitzer had four.

Whittier looks to bounce back as they host the Regals of Cal Lutheran University, this Saturday, October 20 as they take part in their final home game of 2012.
