CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision Wednesday evening to the Athena's of Claremont-M-S to drop to 5-12, 3-10 SCIAC play.
With the win, Claremont-M-S improves to 11-6, 9-4 SCIAC.
Whittier came out of the gates aggressively both offensively and defensively making it difficult for Claremont-M-S to get any good looks on goal until the 16th minute when Madi Shove knocked in a rebound after Isabel Lester broke free on the right side and sent in a cross into the box. Despite holding a two shot advantage (7-5) in the first half, CMS saw Whittier get several counter attacks that could have evened the score up at 1-1 going into the half.
Coming out in the second, CMS tallied two early goals in the 47th and 55th minutes that extended their lead to 3-0. The first goal came from Olivia Sylvester who dribbled down the left side and sent in a lob over Poet keeper Shanna Falch from about 25 yards out. The second goal came from Shove who received a 1 v 1 with Falch.
Whittier would threaten late in the game but the Athena defense stood strong helping Claremont-M-S come away with the three goal victory.
The Purple & Gold wrap up their 2012 season this Saturday, October 27 as they travel to Redlands to take on the Bulldogs with game time set to begin at 1:00pm.
