WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Soccer team had their Alumni night spoiled Saturday night as they fell 1-0 to Claremont-M-S at the Donald E. Graham Soccer Field.
The loss marked the second in a row for the Purple & Gold and their third in their past five games as they dropped to 3-4-3, 1-3-2 SCIAC, while Claremont-M-S remains atop the SCIAC standings at 7-5, 5-1 SCIAC.
It was a scoreless first half with limited number of opportunities to find the back of the goal. Kaela Reisfelt (Beverly Hills, Calif.) and Andrea Aldama (Gardena, Calif.) took two early shots but both missed wide left. Aubrey Baran (La Mirada, Calif.) soon answered with her own shot but was turned away by Athena goalie Kelly McConnell and three minutes later Aldama would take another strike but again would be off the mark as her shot would go just high above the crossbar.
Two minutes into the second half, CMS would find the eventual game winner off the foot of Katelyn Faust. She received a cross from Sarah Tocher and then took a touch in the box before slotting a shot past a diving Alexi Cruz (Long Beach, Calif.).
Whittier attempted to answer throughout the half but only mustered three shots from Leah Kolek (Diamond Bar, Calif.) and Reisfelt, which wouldn't be enough as the Poets would fall 1-0.
Claremont-M-S finished the game with 13 shots compared to Whittier's seven, but WC held a 3-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Reisfelt finished the game with three shots, while Aldama registered two. Cruz finished with five saves against six shots.
The Poets hit the road for their next three games. They begin their road series this Wednesday, October 5 as they take on Cal Lutheran University beginning at 7:00pm.
