WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Soccer team stunned the Regals of Cal Lutheran University Saturday night at the Donald E. Graham Soccer Field sending off their five seniors in dramatic fashion.
Prior to the game, all five seniors were recognized with their families, which included Alexi Cruz (Long Beach, Calif.), Kristina Velasco (Placentia, Calif.), Francesca Escobedo (Fontana, Calif.), Leila Afrasiyabi (Los Angeles, Calif.), and Kaela Reisfelt (Beverly Hills, Calif.).
It was a dead even game, with CLU outshooting the Purple & Gold 21-16 on the evening. The Regals had four corner kicks in the first half but Whittier flipped it around and earned four themselves in the second half.
Following a scoreless first half, Whittier came out aggressive in the second adding the eventual game winner in the 55th minute. Lauren Kai (Torrance, Calif.) put in a beautiful cross that found Afrasiyabi in the box who tapped it in past a diving Coral Hasley.
Still with time on the clock, CLU looked for the equalizer putting on eight shots, but only two would be on frame as Whittier would come away with the one goal victory.
Cruz played all 90:00 posting her 15th career shutout and her sixth this season, while registering eight saves.
Miranda Yzabal (Whittier, Calif.) led the Poets on offense with three shots, while Leah Kolek (Diamond Bar, Calif.), Escobedo, Clarissa Field (Whtitier, Calif.), and Kanoe Morihara (Mililani, HI) each had two.
