LA VERNE, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Soccer team played to a draw with the University of La Verne on the road Saturday night 1-1.
The Poets have now tied twice on the season and have gone into OT for the third time. They improve to 3-1-2, 2-1-1 SCIAC. La Verne is still seeking their first win on the season as they move to 0-4-2, 0-3-1 SCIAC.
La Verne controlled the first half taking six shots and adding five corner kicks, while taking a 1-0 lead into the break following an unassisted goal by Cambria Smith. The Leos put in a long ball that got over the head of the last Poet defender and Smith was able to make the hustle play pushing it past an outstretched Vanessa Martinez (La Mirada, Calif.).
It was a completely different Poet team in the second half as they outshot La Verne 6-1, while adding two corner kicks and it paid off as WC tied the game up in the 61st minute. Freshman Maiquel Vasquez (Chula Vista, Calif.) came down the right wing and served in a ball that found Miranda Yzabal (Whittier, Calif.) in the box for the equalizer.
The Poets were held without a shot in the first OT period but came out with a look in the second session but Lyla Matar (Glendale, Calif.) would miss right allowing ULV to escape with the tie.
Yzabal finished with three shots for the game and Analisa Murillo (Murrieta, Calif.) provided two. Martinez played all 110:00 minutes between the posts and earned the tie without recording a save.
Whittier will host Claremont-M-S this Wednesday evening at 7:00pm, September 19 at Memorial Stadium.
