ORANGE, Calif. – Two second half goals proved the difference Saturday night as the Whittier College Women's Soccer team fell 2-0 to Chapman University at Wilson Field.
Whittier who hasn't surrendered a goal over their last three contests couldn't extend the streak as they move to 4-3-4, 3-3-3 SCIAC. They are 1-1-2 over their last four contests.
After nearly 74 minutes of scoreless play, Emmie Farber opened up the scoring. She found a scrum with five defenders around her inside the Poets' 18-yard box and never gave up charging through all of them to be able to send the ball just past an outstretched Poet keeper Vanessa Martinez (La Mirada, Calif.).
Within the final minutes the Purple & Gold continued to pressure looking for the equalizer. Their best look came in the 84th minute when they drew a corner kick. Clarissa Field (Whittier, Calif.) took the shot and found the head of Sophie Nicotero (Sun City, Calif.) but her look would end up wide keeping WC off the scoreboard.
Then with :19 seconds remaining, Chapman added to their lead this time from Elly Aronson who dribbled down the field, weaving through a couple defenders before finding herself 1v1 with Martinez. Her ensuing shot would take a favorable deflection, rolling into the back of the net that put the game out of reach.
Whittier was edged by one in shots 12-11 but held the advantage on corner kicks 2-1. Martinez played all 90:00 minutes and added three saves. On offense, Miranda Yzabal (Whittier, Calif.) added five shots and Andrea Aldama (Gardena, Calif.) with three.
Whittier remains on the road this Wednesday, October 10 when they travel to take on Occidental College beginning at 7:00pm.
