Kayla Heiss leads Poets in final regular season match-up with Oxy

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Swimming & Diving team wrapped up their regular season Saturday as they dropped a close 163-99 decision to Occidental College.

Senior Kayla Heiss (Honolulu, HI) accounted for the Purple & Gold's three victories on the afternoon, which included taking home top honors in the 50 Fly (:27.19), 100 Fly (1:00.30), and was a member of the 200 Free Relay team that won with a 1:45.34.

Getting the day started was Brenda Shanahan, Julia Hagenbaumer (Naperville, Ill.), Heiss, and Ashley Sagouspe (Fresno, Calif.) who took 2nd in the 200 Medley Relay (1:55.73).  Allison Novak (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) took to the distance and took 2nd in the 1650 Free (19:35.59), while Madeleine McMurray (Phnom Penh, Cambodia) and Abigail Pittman (Carson City, NV) went 3-4 with times of 19:53.66 and 20:51.03.

Sydney Kanne (Duarte, Calif.), Morgan Molinaro (Chino Hills, Calif.), and Sagouspe went 2-3-4 in the 200 Free totaling nine points for the Purple & Gold.  Shanahan took 2nd in the 100 Back (1:04.42), while Hagenbaumer was 2nd in the 100 Breast (1:10.48).  Shanahan then returned in the 50 Free finishing 2nd (:26.33).  Sagouspe, Molinaro, and Kanne went 2-3-4 in the 100 Free. 

Kanne then led a trio in the 50 Back placing 4th (:31.16) and Hagenbaumer would then come up in 3rd in the 50 Breast (:33.70). 

Molinaro finished 2nd in the 500 Free (5:37.97) with Novak and McMurray going 4 (5:45.05) -5 (5:59.26).  Victoria Unger finished 4th in the 100 Fly (1:09.14), while Hagenbaumer, Sagouspe, and Erika Ngo (Alhambra, Calif.) would go 3-4-5 in the 400 IM. 

The team of Heiss, Shanahan, Brianna Nowicki (Londonderry, NH), and Kanne would take 1st in the 200 Free Relay (1:45.34), while Molinaro, Unger, Novak, and McMurray would finish 4th (1:55.07).           

Whittier has already began preparations for the SCIAC Championships, which will take place next week from Wednesday-Saturday, February 15-18 in Commerce, Calif. at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center.
