Poets sit in 5th place after Day 1 of SCIAC Championships

COMMERCE, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Swimming & Diving team currently sits in 5th place following Day 1 of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships with 100 points.

Sophomore Becca Ayers who has already qualified for the NCAA Division III West Regionals on both boards got the Purple & Gold off to a strong start.  Out of 26 divers on the 1-Meter, she was able to finish inside of the Top 10 in the Prelims before taking home 5th place recognition during the finals with an overall score of 412.50.

In the nightcap the relays took form, which included the 200 Medley and the 800 Free.  The team of Brenda Shanahan (San Ramon, Calif.), Julia Hagenbaumer (Naperville, Ill.), Kayla Heiss (Honolulu, HI), and Brianna Nowicki (Londonderry, NH) finished 5th in the Medley with a time of 1:50.23.   

Then in the 800, Whittier's' Ashley Sagouspe (Fresno, Calif.), Allison Novak (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), Morgan Molinaro (Chino Hills, Calif.), and Sydney Kanne (Duarte, Calif.) would cap off the scoring with a 7th place finish with a time of 8:09.19.

On Day 2 tomorrow, events include the Women's 3-Meter Prelims, the Men's 3-Meter Final, the 500 Free, 200 IM, 50 Free, 200 Free, and a few Time Trials.
