COMMERCE, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Swimming & Diving team posted a strong finish to the 2017 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships by posting a total of 335 points over the four days.
After a strong prelims in the morning, five swimmers took part in the 1650 Free. Morgan Molinaro (Chino Hills, Calif.) led the Purple & Gold finishing 13th (18:32.76) and was joined by Allison Novak (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.), Madeleine McMurray (Phnom Penh, Cambodia), and Sydney Kanne (Duarte, Calif.) who went 16th (18:50.34), 17th (18:54.56), 18th (19:08.11). Last Poet finisher in the event was Abigail Pittman (Carson City, NV) who took 20th with a time of 19:20.80.
The individual events continued to roll moving to the 100 Free. Kayla Heiss (Honolulu, HI) once again came up big with a 5th place finish with a time of 53.04, which got big points for Whittier. Julia Hagenbaumer (Naperville, Ill.) was a second off making it to the finals in the 200 Breast as she placed 10th with a time of 2:27.95, while Kayanna Heffner (Bend, OR) took 17th (2:33.31).
In the final event, the 400 Free Relay, Whittier's team of Ashley Sagouspe (Fresno, Calif.), Brianna Nowicki (Londonderry, NH), Esther Choe (Mercer Island, WA), and Heiss lit up the crowd as they came in with a quick 3:38.10 placing them 5th. The team of Hagenbaumer, Brenda Shanahan (San Ramon, Calif.), Molinaro, and Kanne wrapped up the Poet finishers with a 15th place finish with a time of 3:46.78.
