Alexa Melara Wins 200 IM on Day 2 of SCIAC Championships

COMMERCE, Calif. – Records continued to fall on Day 2 of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Swimming & Diving Championships.

Whittier picked up another 26 points on the second day of competition as they ran their total to 92 points, keeping them in 8th

Freshman Alexa Melara (Rialto, Calif.) led the Purple & Gold and picked up big points as she had her breakout performance of her career going 2:06.93 in the 200 IM to win the event, while shattering the previous school record by over five seconds, held by Esther Choe (Mercer Island, WA) last year in 2017 (2:11.83).  Choe took part in the same event and finished 10th overall picking up another 10 points for WC and fell unlucky as she broke her own record posting a 2:11.30.

Freshman Brooke Geske (San Pedro, Calif.) then took charge in the 50 Free, placing 6th with a 24.02 picking up another 15 points for Whittier.

Then to cap off the day, the 200 Free Relay team of Lexi Mauldin (Modesto, Calif.), Choe, Brenda Shanahan (San Ramon, Calif.), and Geske would take 7th with a 1:39.71, grabbing another 28 points.
