LA VERNE, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Swimming & Diving team fell in a heartbreaker Saturday morning as they dropped a tight 148-138 decision to the University of La Verne.
Megan Thai (Alhambra, Calif.) continues to do damage on the boards as she again took home top marks on both the 1-meter (149.75) and 3-meter (161.25) boards. Teammate Becca Ayers (La Habra, Calif.) wasn't far off finishing 2nd in both events with marks of 141.80 and 107, respectively. Freshman Tai-Tai Scherer (Jacksonville, FL) was another scorer for the Poets on the 1-meter finishing 3rd overall with a 129.25.
Jump-starting the races, the team of Brooke Geske (San Pedro, Calif.), Esther Choe (Mercer Island, WA), Brenda Shanahan (San Ramon, Calif.), and Lexi Mauldin (Modetso, Calif.) would finish 2nd overall in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:57.38. Allie Novak (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and Morgan Molinaro (Chino Hills, Calif.) would then shine in the distance with Novak winning the 1000 Free with a time of 11:25.28 and Molinaro finishing 3rd (11:41.25).
Geske returned to the pool in her first individual event grabbing nine points in the 200 Free (2:03.76). She also won the 100 Free (55.78) and 200 IM (2:14.82). Victoria Unger (Granite Bay, Calif.) finished 3rd in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:49.46.
Mauldin and Maya Williams-Young (Eugene, OR) took part in the 100 Back finishing 2nd (1:01.70) and 4th (1:19.81) respectively. Shanahan and Choe went 2-3 in the 100 Breast with times of 1:13.98 and 1:15.17. Shanahan then returned three events later to win the 50 Free with a time of 25.72 and was joined by Williams-Young who went 7th (32.14).
Mauldin scored also in the 100 Free finishing 4th with a time of 59.64.
Wrapping up the morning, the team of Shanahan, Novak, Molinaro, and Unger took top honors in the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:58.41.
Whittier has the month of December off from competition and will resume on January 12 when they host Claremont-M-S beginning at 11:00am.
