WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Swimming & Diving team didn't back down from a match-up with Claremont-M-S Saturday despite falling 231-43 at the Slade Aquatic Center.
One bright spot on the day was senior Becca Ayers (La Habra, Calif.) who qualified for regionals on the 1-meter board. She posted a 288.00 to win the event giving Whittier a quick nine points. She then added another three points on the 3-meter for the Purple & Gold finishing 3rd with a score of 254.80.
Whittier was swimming without Esther Choe (Mercer Island, WA), who was out due to illness but the team rallied and started things off with a 4th place finish in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 2:03.55, which included Brooke Geske (San Pedro, Calif.), Brenda Shanahan (San Ramon, Calif.), Victoria Unger (Granite Bay, Calif.), and Morgan Molinaro (Chino Hills, Calif.).
Molinaro returned in the 200 Free picking up two points by placing 5th (2:08.51). Shanahan took 4th in the 100 Breast with a mark of 1:17.54 and Unger followed with a 3rd place finish in the 200 Fly (2:46.45). Geske, another bright spot on the day crushed it in the 50 Free sprinting to a 2nd place finish with a time of 24.90 giving WC another four points and then followed with another podium finish in the 100 Free, placing 2nd with a time of 54.21.
Maya Williams-Young (Eugene, OR) who was a late add in the 200 Backstroke picked up a couple of points finishing 4th with a time of 2:40.30. Shanahan returned in the 200 Breast placing 3rd with a 2:48.71 followed by a 5th place finish by Molinaro in the 500 Free with a time of 5:54.29.
Unger had a 6th place finish in the 100 Fly with a time of 1:14.47 and then the team of Shanahan, Molinaro, Geske, and Unger would end the day with a 5th place finish in the 400 Free Relay with a time of 4:02.27.
Whittier returns to the pool and remains in conference play next Saturday, January 19 when they travel to Pasadena to take on Caltech beginning at 11:00am.
