Poets battle rain, wind and Chapman

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Swimming & Diving team battled the elements Saturday morning at the Slade Aquatic Center but couldn't come away with a victory as they fell 167-104 to Chapman University.

The divers once again got things going for the Purple & Gold.  Senior Becca Ayers (La Habra, Calif.)and freshman Megan Thai (Alhambra, Calif.)combined for 25 points on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.  Ayers won the 1-meter with a 275.30 with Thai placing 3rd(259.40).  Thai though came up strong on the 3-meter winning the event with a 260.30 edging Ayers by a point who posted a 259.20.  

This gave WC an early lead, which they couldn't hold.  The team of Brooke Geske (San Pedro, Calif.)Esther Choe (Mercer Island WA)Brenda Shanahan (San Ramon, Calif.), and Allie Novak (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.)picked up another four points in the 200 Medley Relay placing 2ndwith a time of 2:01.26.  Then senior Morgan Molinaro (Chino Hills, Calif.)took over in the distance winning the 1000 Free with a time of 11:49.08.  She also controlled the 500 Free finishing 4th(5:41.02) followed closely by Novak who went 5thwith a 5:42.19.  

Novak also competed in the 200 Free placing 7thwith a 2:09.33.  Victoria Unger (Granite Bay, Calif.)had a 4thplace finish in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:44.41 and then took 3rdin the 100 Fly (1:13.49).

Choe added points in the 200 Breast placing 2ndwith a 2:40.70 and then came up huge in the 200 IM winning the event with a 2:23.66.  Maya Williams-Young (Eugene, OR)was another Poet who scored taking 6thin the 200 Back (2:40.20) and 8thin the 100 Back (1:16.99), while Lexi Mauldin (Modesto, Calif.)took 3rdin the 100 Free (1:00.45) and 4thin the 100 Back (1:04.61).  Shanahan for her individual events had a nice day taking 2ndin both the 50 Free and 100 Free with times of 25.87 and 57.53, respectively.  

Then of course Geske provided yet another strong performance winning both individual events she was entered in, which included the 100 Back (1:01.66) and 200 Back (2:13.77).  She combined for 18 points for the Poets.  The final event of the day was the 400 Free Relay where Shanahan, Molinaro, Choe, and Geske would place 2ndposting a time of 3:52.00.            

Whittier competes for the last time in the regular season next Saturday, February 9 when they host the University of Redlands and Cal Lutheran on Senior Day.
