WHITTIER, Calif. – The No. 24 ranked Leopards of the University of La Verne spoiled the Whittier College women's tennis team' senior day as they rolled to the 9-0 sweep at the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts.
Benay Weintraub (Memphis, TN) was the lone Poet recognized before the match but was unable to come away with a victory Saturday morning as she dropped an 8-3 decision with Ruthie Kaplan (Coto De Caza) at No. 2 doubles before falling in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles against Laina Matusda.
The match wrapped up the regular season finale for the Purple & Gold as they finished 2015 4-17, 2-6 SCIAC.
The highlight for ULV was at No. 1 singles where Andrea Madrigal managed to hold off Meagan Zamilpa (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) for the first time in her career.
Prior to today's meeting, Zamilpa owned the senior claiming three set victories in 2012 and 2013. Whittier attempted to stay away from an early sweep in doubles as Zamilpa and Gabi Etchegaray (Placentia, Calif.) put together a strong showing at No. 1 doubles only to fall 9-8 (1) to Matsuda and Bridget Etchegaray.
La Verne quickly got two victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles that clinched the overall victory and the Etchegaray twins battled at No. 3 with Bridget edging her sister 6-4, 6-2 that rounded out the scoring for ULV.
The Poets return to action in two weeks at the Ojai Valley Championships from April 23-26.
