WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Tennis team opened up 2018 Tuesday with a match-up against St. Benedicts but couldn't come away with the victory as they fell 6-3 at the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts.
The Purple & Gold welcomed two new faces into the lineup, which included freshmen Kallysta Lopez (Whittier, Calif.) and Kiara Embred (Los Angeles, Calif.). They teamed up together at No. 2 doubles in their first collegiate match and held a break midway through but gave it right back as they fell 8-6 to Ellen Stensrud and Mackenzie Schurhamer.
Whittier picked up their first point at the top spot as Kindall Yeung (Fullerton, Calif.) and Amanda Rodriguez (Glendora, Calif.) would take out Kayla McIver and Tessa Rahrick quickly 8-2. But after doubles WC still found themselves trailing 2-1 following an 8-3 loss at No. 3 by Karissa Lee (Whittier, Calif.) and Madeline Schmidt-Perez (San Marino, Calif.).
In singles, Yeung and Rodriguez kept the Poets in striking distance winning at No. 1 and No. 2 winning 6-3, 7-5 and 6-3, 6-2, each respectively. But those would be the only points mustered as CSB would rattle off the final four points to clinch the win.
Lopez and Embred fell at No. 4 and No. 5 losing 6-2, 6-2 at both positions. Schmidt-Perez looked like she would get the Poets their fourth point on the day going up 5-2 in the first set but she couldn't hold on as Stensrud would rally to win 7-6 (7), 6-3.
The final match on came at No. 6 from Lee who went the distance against Kylie Miller. She took the opening set in a breaker 7-6 (9), was broken once in the second to fall 6-3 and then saw herself in another breaker in the third but this time it went to Miller as she won 7-6 (9).
Whittier returns this evening, Thursday, March 8 to host El Camino College in an exhibition contest beginning at 5:00pm.
