WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Tennis team pulled off another tough win at the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts as they edged George Fox University 6-3.
The Purple & Gold came from behind trailing 2-1 after doubles to pull off the victory against their West Region foe. Kallysta Lopez (Whittier, Calif.) and Karissa Lee (Whittier, Calif.) fell quickly at No. 3 doubles 8-0 and Kiara Embrey (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Madeline Schmidt-Perez (San Marino, Calif.) fell at No. 2 doubles 8-1 putting WC in an early hole 2-0.
At No. 1 though, junior Kindall Yeung (Fullerton, Calif.) and sophomore Amanda Rodriguez (Glendora, Calif.) were able to put the Poets on the scoreboard pulling out a 9-8 (7-4) breaker giving the Poets hope.
They carried this momentum into singles winning five of the next six positions. Lopez led the charge at No. 3 winning 6-2, 6-3 that deadlocked the match. Schmidt-Perez followed with a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 5 putting the Poets on top but that lead soon diminished as Embrey would fall at No. 4 putting GFU back on top 3-2.
But the momentum would swing again with Rodriguez sweeping No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-3 over Sophia Lawrence and Yeung clinching the match by earning a break in each set to edge Jillian Studer 6-4, 7-5 at the top spot.
The final point on the day came from Lee who edged Alyssa Byde 7-5, 7-5 at No. 6 singles that gave the Poets their sixth point.
