CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Tennis team had a rough two days last week getting swept by No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer and No. 2 Claremont-M-S.
The Purple & Gold who are having a strong season currently sit at 5-9, 1-3 SCIAC, tied for the most wins since 2015.
Match 1 (No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer; L, 9-0)
Whittier got swept in doubles quickly but provided a push at No. 1 and No. 2 from Kindall Yeung (Brea, Calif.) and Amanda Rodriguez (Glendora, Calif.) and Avery Turner and Kallysta Lopez (Whittier, Calif.) who each fell 8-3.
In singles, the Sagehens collected three points at No. 3, No. 5, and No. 6 all winning in shutout frames 6-0, 6-0. Lopez was able to get a game in each set at No. 4 against Rebecca Salaway but the match of the day came from Yeung at the top spot falling 6-3, 6-2 against Caroline Casper.
Match 2 (No. 2 Claremont-M-S; L, 9-0)
The very next day Whittier had to take on Claremont-M-S and they faced yet another tough match-up. The Purple & Gold started off strong in doubles. Yeung and Rodriguez threatened at the top spot falling 8-5 and Stacey Bendanillo (Brawley, Calif.) and Madeline Schmidt-Perez (San Marino, Calif.) played tough at No. 3 losing 8-3.
In singles the Poets were only able to collect five games total across the six spots. Lopez again got one game each set at No. 4 along with Rodriguez doing the same at No. 2.
Whittier returns to the court today, Friday, April 12 when they host Cal Lutheran University beginning at 3:00pm.
