WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Tennis team ended their 2019 regular season Saturday falling 7-2 to Caltech.
Prior to the match Head Coach Kristin Yep recognized her lone senior Kindall Yeung (Brea, Calif.) who was taking part in her final home match of her collegiate career.
Heading into the match-up Whittier was already up 2-0 due to Caltech not having enough players to field a team. But this advantage wasn't enough as Caltech would sweep both doubles and all five singles spots to take the road win.
Whittier finished their season 5-12, 1-6 SCIAC.
Leading 1-0 in doubles, Whittier couldn't use it to gain momentum as Yeung and Amanda Rodriguez (Glendora, Calif.) would put together a highly contested match at the top falling 8-5 to the 8th Ranked team in the West Region. At No. 2, Kallysta Lopez (Whittier, Calif.) and Avery Turner (Austin, TX) put together a strong effort but couldn't overcome a pair of late breaks falling 8-4 handing CIT a 2-1 advantage.
In singles all five spots were decided in straight sets. Yeung put together a strong effort at No. 1 against Kana Moriyama getting broken once at 6-4 before falling 6-1 in the second. Turner put up three games at No. 3 against Sarina Liu but couldn't carry it over into the second falling 6-0. The match of the day came at No. 4 from Lopez who tested Michelle Hyun. Lopez handled the pace and surrendered a break in each set falling 6-4, 6-3.
Whittier leaves this weekend for the Ojai Championships in Ventura, Calif. Players taking part include Yeung and Rodriguez.
