Poets face tough field at SCIAC No. 3

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's & Women's Track & Field teams met a tough field during the SCIAC No. 3 Tournament facing off against Redlands, Occidental, and Caltech.

On the women's side in the 1500m, Anahy Covarrubias led with a 4:57.05 followed closely by Julissa Tobias at 4:57.49 and then Jessica Iribe with a 5:20.37. ReyAnn Rivera went 2:36.37 in the 800m for 7th and Ashley Stanford placed 4th in the 400m with a 71.81.  Kourtney Brodnax placed 5th in the 100m Hurdles with an 18.56 and 4th in the 400m Hurdles with a 71.55.  Laneisha Ross placed 2nd in the high jump with a 4' 11' effort and Destinee Unubia was 3rd in the long jump at 15' 1.75'.

In the throwing events, Julia Reyes was 3rd in the javelin at 104' 2.25', and 6th in the discus at 84' 3.25". Christina Prieto was 5th in the hammer at 93' 11.5" (No. 10 all time), was 5th in the shot put at 30' 8.75", and 2nd in the discus at 98' 10.25". The 4x100m relay team of Sheldyn Odom, Ross, Stanford, and Brodnax placed 2nd with a 51.9 for No. 5 all time.

On the men's side in the 1500m Julian Sandoval won the race with a PR of 4:00.3 with Kevin Huey in 3rd with a 4:05.85, and Ruben Solorza in 7th at 4:10.3.  David Richardson ran his first 100m ever to go 11.81 for 10th place while also placing 4th in the high jump and 7th in the long jump. Gabriel Calove ran a 2:12.33 in the 800m and Eric Jennings was 3rd in the long jump at 21'.75".  Miguel Redmond was 2nd in the pole vault with a 13' 5.25" effort.  Ty Gammiere was 5th in the pole vault with PR of 10' 11.75 and 6th in the long jump with a 19' 4.25". Christian Sook won the javelin with a 150' 10" effort, Somaan Iqbal was 3rd in the discus with a 128' 3.25" throw, and Andrew Jimenez went 41' 9.5" in the shot put for 5th place.

The next event will be the SCIAC Prelims and Finals this weekend Friday and Saturday April 29-30 hosted by Occidental College.
