CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's and Women's Track & Field teams represented well at the first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Multi Dual Saturday as they took on the University of Redlands and Claremont-M-S.
In the matchup against Claremont-M-S the men fell 122-40, while the women dropped 123-38. Against Redlands the Poets men's team registered a score of 117-43, while the women scored a 116-43.
Leading the women was senior Jacqueline Walker (Portland, OR) who completed a jump of 5.10 meters in the Long Jump, which placed her 4th All-Time in the Whittier College Track & Field Record books and 3rd overall at the meet.
She was joined by Destinee Unabia (Chino Hills, Calif.) who moved to 10th All-Time by jumping 9.56 meters in the triple jump and Christina Prieto (La Mirada, Calif.) who led the throwers who finished 4rd at the meet in the shot-put throwing 10.80 meters, which placed her 10th All-Time. In the discus she also finished 5th with a mark of 89-11, while Julia Reyes (La Puente, Calif.) took 7th in the Shot Put (89-06), 8th in the Discus (70-00), and 3rd in the Javelin (104-00).
On the distance side, Julissa Tobias (Norwalk, Calif.) paced the Poets going 4:49.33 in the 1500, which was good enough for 3rd at the meet. Anahy Covarrubias (Los Angeles, Calif.) followed in the 800 Meter placing 4th (2:20.12), while Tobias was right behind in 6th (2:23.77). Jessica Iribe (Buena Park, Calif.) took part in the 5,000 Meter placing 3rd (18:57.61) with Piper Lowinger (Whittier, Calif.) going 6th in the 100 Meter Hurdles (16.29). Sheldyn Odom (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) got the events started with an 8th place finish in the 100 Meter (13.27) and followed with a 5th place performance in the 200 Meter (27.60).
Other scorers included Kourtney Brodnax (Culver City, Calif.) in the 400 Hurdles finishing 6th (1:10.83), the 4x100 Relay team of Odom, Walker, Lowinger, and Danielle Guardado (Covina, Calif.) who finished 4th (52.47), the 4 x 400 Relay team of Brodnax, Guardado, Tobias, and Covarrubias who took 4th (4:18.57).
On the men's side, dual sport athlete Ray Ray Roberson (Albuquerque, NM) opened up his first collegiate meet with an impressive 50.14 in the 400 Meter, which placed him 2nd overall at the meet, while placing 3rd in the 200 Meter with a time of 22.66.
Distance runners Julian Sandoval (El Monte, Calif.), Joshua Minnie (Oceanside, Calif.), and William Howells (Webster Grove, MO) all ran well in the 800 Meter all performing with under two minute marks placing 5th, 6th, and 8th, respectively.
In the 1500, Sandoval returned to take 5th posting a time of 4:02.06, while Craig Rogers (Whittier, Calif.) put together a strong finish in the 110 Hurdles taking 3rd with a mark of 16.77.
Other scorers for Whittier included Natnael Yitayew (San Diego, Calif.) who grabbed 3rd place recognition in the 400 Meter Hurdles (1:00.28), KamRon Perry (San Jose, Calif.) in the Steeplechase (6th – 10:37.94), Rogers in the High Jump (6th – 5-10.75), Miguel Redmond (San Jose, Calif.) who went 7th in the 100 Meter Dash (11.37) and 4th in the Pole Vault (12-05.50), Andrew Jimenez (Tehachapi, Calif.) in the shot put (4th – 42-06.25) and Hammer Throw (7th – 111-06), and Somaan Iqbal (Bakersfield, Calif.) in the javelin (5th – 129-02).
The Whittier College distance runners return to competition this Friday, March 10 as they take part in the Oxy Distance Carnival hosted by Occidental College.
