Poets take 3rd at SCIAC No. 3 Dual Meet

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Track & Field team wrapped up their third dual meet taking 3rd overall picking up wins over Caltech (93-47) and Chapman (103-27), while narrowing missing an upset victory over La Verne (85-70). 

Julissa Tobias (Norwalk, Calif.) led the distance taking 2nd in the 1500m with a PR, which was less than 0.2 seconds off of a school record, the 18th fastest time in the nation and currently in national qualifying range.

Anahy Covarrubias (Los Angeles, Calif.) PR'd in the 400m taking 2nd in the event with a time of 59.48 then followed that up with a 4th place finish in the 800m (2:27.46).  Danielle Guardado (Covina, Calif.) who posted a 13.12 in the 100m, which placed her 3rd overall returned in the 200m to take 3rd with a PR of 27.48. 

Jessica Iribe (Buena Park, Calif.) took the top spot in the 5000m posting a mark of 18:17.06 and was followed by freshman Piper Lowinger (Whittier, Calif.) who PR'd in the 100 Hurdles taking 2nd with a 15.85.

Kourtney Brodnax (Culver City, Calif.) took 2nd in the 400m Hurdles with a time of 1:08 with Jessica McCollum (Aurora, CO) taking 3rd in the 3000m Steeplechase (12:49.72).

In the 4 x 100 Relay, the team of Lowinger, Guardado, Brodnax and Sheldyn Odom (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) grabbed a quick 2nd place finish with a mark of 50.84.               

In the field events Christina Prieto (La Mirada, Calif.) led the Purple & Gold winning the shot put with a throw of 10.07m.  Melissa Tobias (Norwalk, Calif.) took 2nd in the Pole Vault (2.30m), while Caroline Pham (La Habra, Calif.) took 10th and 6th in the Long and Triple Jumps. 

In the discus, Julia Reyes (La Puente, Calif.) led the Poets with a 4th place finish of 28.44m and returned in the Hammer Throw taking 5th (27.47m).  She wrapped up the day taking 2nd overall in the Javelin (32.22m). 

Whittier gets ready for the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Prelims, which will take place this Friday, April 28 at Pomona College.  The very next day are the SCIAC Championship Finals.
