COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – The Whittier College Volleyball team wrapped up their trip to the Colorado College Classic Saturday as they split on day two beating Ithaca in four sets before dropping in straights to Augustana (Ill.).

Ithaca (W, 25-14, 23-25, 25-21, 25-20)

After a strong day one of the classic, the Purple & Gold kept the momentum going against Ithaca.  Each set was a battle but the Poets were able to have two big sets hitting the ball that put them on top.  They hit .205 in the first en route to a lopsided 25-14 win and then had to fight their back after dropping the second to hold off the Bombers 25-21, 25-20.

Makenzie Thieme (Corona, Calif.) continues to pound the ball as she recorded a match high 18 kills on 48 attempts for a .250 hitting percentage and also posted a double double with 14 digs.  Ashley Whittall (Norwalk, Calif.) was the next closest in kills with nine and Alaina Rhee (Kent, WA) added eight herself with seven block assists.

Camryn Purdom (Moreno Valley, Calif.) led the offense finishing with 22 assists and totaled 11 digs, while Clarissa Standafer (Alta Loma, Calif.) once again put up double digit digs with 15.

Augustana (Ill.) (L,   25-20, 25-23, 30-28)

The second game proved to be a battle as well but it went the way of the Vikings.  Augustana was coming off a five set thriller against No. 9 Colorado College but they were tested by the Purple & Gold.

Despite hitting under .050 for two of the three sets, the Poets still managed to compete.  They fell 25-20 in the first and then went 25-23 before being edged 30-28 in the third.  Thieme was held for the first time under double digits as she finished with seven kills, while picking up 14 digs.  Whittall led the offense adding 11 kills, while Rhee posted six.

Purdom added 20 assists and 10 digs and Standafer tacked on six assists and 11 digs as well.

Whittier remains on the road this upcoming weekend on September 8-9 as they take part in the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational.  Here they will take on Pacific Lutheran (3:00pm), UC Santa Cruz (5:00pm), Whitworth (11:30am), and Trinity (TX) (4:00pm).
