WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College Women's Water Polo team split on Saturday during the Whittier Mini-Tournament as they fell short to Cal Baptist (13-8) before holding on to beat Concordia (Calif.) (16-13).

Game 1 (Cal Baptist; L, 12-8)

Whittier opened with a match-up against Cal Baptist.  They got out of the gates quickly taking a 4-3 advantage after the first eight minutes with goals coming from Zyania Morales (Commerce, Calif.), Kendyl Riley (Huntington Beach, Calif.), and Jenel Rivera (Whittier, Calif.).

But in the second the Lancers found their offense outscoring the Purple & Gold 5-3 taking an 8-7 lead into the break.  This time Isabella Gorrocino (Montebello, Calif.) would find the back of the goal twice that keep the score at a one goal deficit.

CBU added the first two goals of the third quarter before Lindsay Shoaff (Costa Mesa, Calif.) would add her first of the game but that would be the final goal added by the Poets as Cal Baptist would tack on two in the fourth en route to puling off the five goal victory.

Morales finished with three goals for the game.

Game 2 (Concordia; W, 16-13)

The second game was a high scoring affair but the Poets were able to use a big fourth quarter to pull off the three goal victory.

Whittier held a slight 3-2 advantage after the first quarter of play but would go off for another five in the second from four different players, which included two from Gorrocino that gave WC an 8-5 lead at the break.

Other goals in that spurt came from Arlin De La Mora (Commerce, Calif.), Hannah Ellett (Merced, Calif.), and Shoaff.

In the third, Concordia managed to outscore the Poets 4-3 to pull within four but in the fourth Whittier would again pour in another five with two coming from Rivera that gave them the three goal victory.

Gorrocino and Rivera each ended with four goals apiece.

Whittier returns to competition on Wednesday, February 22 as they take on Hawaii (4:00pm) and Siena (7:00pm).
