IRVINE, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Water Polo team had a tough match-up Sunday afternoon with UC Irvine falling 22-6 to the No. 7 ranked team in the country.
The Purple & Gold have now had back-to-back tough match-ups and move to 0-2. They trailed 3-0 early in the first quarter until Teresa Marchetti (Messina, Italy) was able to connect with a power play. After that UC Irvine added the next five goals, which gave them a 5-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and then an 8-1 advantage midway through the second. Sawyer Bellville (Chino, Calif.), transfer from USC who was out due to injury against Concordia (CA) added her first goal of the season at the 5:06 mark midway in the second but Whittier still saw themselves trailing 9-2 at the break.
Whittier found some offense in the third putting up three goals from Marchetti and Anastacia Gonzalez (Montebello, Calif.), but the defense still was unable to stop the high powered offense of the Anteaters who put up another seven goals to go on top 16-5. In the fourth, Marchetti completed the hat trick at the 6:10 mark converting a 5-meter but that would be the lone goal scored in the period as WC fell 22-6.
Whittier was outshot 36-21 and was 2-for-7 on man-ups. Lauren Tapia (Whittier, Calif.) got the start and played the first half finishing with three saves, while Tahlia Pou (Stockton, Calif.) stopped five in the second half.
Whittier returns to the pool March 1-2 during the Claremont Convergence. There they will take on Siena College, Cal State Monterey Bay, McKendree, and St. Francis (NY).
